Symptoms
This fungus dwells in your cat’s hair follicles. As the shafts become weaker, your cat will start to lose hair. The resulting hair loss usually takes the form of a circle. This normally affects the limbs and head. Your cat may also have dry, flaky skin that’s very itchy.
Diagnosis
Ringworm can easily be diagnosed different ways. A Wood’s lamp, a type of ultraviolet light, is the easiest way to diagnose ringworm. Many species of fungus will glow a fluorescent green when exposed to this lamp. Strands of hair can also be analyzed in a lab. The hair sample will need to sit for a few weeks to wait for fungus to grow.
Treatment
If left untreated, your cat will likely get rid of the condition himself in two to four months. However, in the meantime, your cat could easily pass the disease on to you or other animals. So, it’s best to get it treated quickly.
Most cats can be treated for ringworm using a lime sulfur shampoo. Your cat can also take various antifungal medications. So treatment is more effective, cats with long hair should have it clipped. As a precaution, you should also treat any other animals in the household.
